Reporting LUNMU's completion of 2024 harvest ceremony (Niiname-sai・新嘗祭)

Every year, on November 23rd, Shinto shrines across Japan, along with the current Japanese emperor, perform a ceremony known as Niiname-sai (新嘗祭) to give thanks to Kami for the year's rice harvest. It has been tradition to not eat the new rice crop until the ceremony is completed by the emperor offering his prayer of thanks on behalf of Japanese citizens, cooks his own rice and ceremonially eats it.

It is a custom for the emperor to grow and harvest his own rice at the imperial palace for use in this and other ceremonies.

As you can imagine, the Niiname-sai is considered one of the most important rituals of the year and an ancient ritual that has been conducted since the founding of Japan, although awareness of it has waned in modern times.

We learned about the importance of this festival through attending a recent gathering with author, Youtuber, and founder of Sekaimura eco-village network, Mitsuro Sato (佐藤みつろう) AKA Mitsulow, and subsequently watching some of his video content. He shared that someone in the imperial household directly told him that there was a spiritual problem because 2024's new rice crop was anomalously eaten before the Niiname-sai due to a late summer rice shortage.

Mitsulow's research in the subject showed that the Niiname-sai was purposely marginalized by the occupying allied forces after World War 2, hidden behind a manufactured holiday, Labor Thanksgiving Day, that takes place on the same day. This was done to suppress Japan's power, especially its ability to self-sustain its economy. As such, revealing the true meaning of the Niiname-sai is crucial for Japan to become spiritually independent from Western control.

Mitsulow's urge over the last few weeks has been for Japanese to attend the Niiname-sai ritual at their local shrine.

Unfortunately for us, we have both been under the weather and were not able to get out to a ceremony. Instead, we have decided to participate in the day's ceremonies in front of our home by offering a prayer of thanks to the Kami for the abundance that we, as a humanity, have received over the last year.
